“Land of the High Passes” is how Ladakh is known. Leh is the largest town and district in the Ladakh area, which is divided into two districts: Leh and Kargil. From the Srinagar end of the Kashmir Valley, two highways link to Ladakh: the Zoji-La Pass route and the Kargil route. From April/May to November/December, this route is available. In the winter, the Zoji-La Pass is closed due to snow.

The second route, from the Himachal Pradesh side, is the high-altitude (3,900 metres Rohtang Pass) Manali-Leh Highway. This route is only available from May to November.
